Get to know him through this exclusive Q&A session:
Q: How did you get started in the music industry, and what drew you to mixing and engineering?
A: I’ve been interested in music since I was a kid and have always played instruments. Within the last six months, I realized that I wanted to take it to the next level and work with music seriously. I always knew I wanted to be involved in the “behind the scenes” of the music industry and never as the front man. That’s when I found mixing and engineering. It gave me a way to do something so integral in the industry yet still stay behind the scenes.
Q: What is your favorite part of the mixing process, and why?
A: My favorite part of the mixing process is EQ on vocals. I find that there is so much you can do with such a simple idea. Being able to separate vocals into different frequencies and being able to hear each different section in the way you want is so amazing. I love bringing out certain frequencies and hiding others. I also love EQ since it is extremely technical but also leaves much room for creativity.
Q: Can you share a memorable experience from your career as an engineer?
A: The most memorable experience in my career so far is getting to be a part of RAPPERSTORE. Being able to have a part in such an amazing studio and brand will forever be memorable to me. As this is my first step into the real world of the music industry, I will always cherish it.
Q: How do you ensure that each track you mix sounds its best?
A: To make sure that each track I mix sounds the best it can, I like to listen to the track in three different ways. Similar to the way Barry Gordy did, I like to listen to the tracks off my studio headphones and speakers, phone speakers, and car speakers. This helps me test all the different types of methods that listeners will use to listen to the song, ensuring it sounds great in every setting for every person.
Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your work, and how do you overcome them?
A: One of the biggest challenges I face is finding business and artists that need services. With the way the music industry is nowadays, everything is so independent, meaning more artists feel like they can mix their own work. To overcome this, I ensure that artists understand that as an engineer, I’m offering more than just mixing and mastering services but also a relationship for the artist and another set of ears on a project that could be extremely helpful.
Q: What has been your favorite project to work on, and what made it special?
A: My favorite project I have been a part of is a single by 1moe titled “Own Way.” I loved working with 1moe as he allowed me to show my creative ability with no restrictions. It was also one of the first songs I ever worked on, so it will always have a special place in my heart.
Q: How do you stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in music production?
A: With the constant development of technology within the industry, it can be difficult to stay on top of it all. In order to stay updated, I make sure to be present on social media and do my best to stay connected with other engineers and producers. By staying active on socials and being integrated with others, I am always exposed to the latest trends and technology and make sure to implement them into my work.
Q: What excites you most about joining the RAPPERSTORE team?
A: As this is my first studio position, I could not be more excited to be joining RAPPERSTORE. I am most excited to meet all the great producers, engineers, and artists that are a part of the studio. This will help me expand my knowledge in the industry and allow me to work with people all over the world, which is very important to me.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring producers and engineers?
A: One piece of advice I would give to aspiring producers and engineers is to never give up on the grind. This industry is difficult to get started in and could feel demotivating, but if you keep grinding and putting in the work, it’ll all come together. It just takes time. Be consistent and confident in your work because even if 1,000 people don’t like it, you will find someone that will.
Q: How do you balance creativity and technical precision in your work?
A: With mixing and mastering, it can be difficult to balance creativity and technical precision. The process of mixing involves a lot of technical precision, but once that is out of the way, I find that if I am working with the right artist, I am able to implement my creativity into the track. I find that most of my creativity comes later into the mixing process in places such as reverb, delay, and autotune.
We are excited to see the incredible work that Mixedbyjtw will bring to RAPPERSTORE.
